On January 8, 2021, the National Health Commission of the people's Republic of China (NHC) officially approved sodium hyaluronate as a new food raw material. Previously, sodium hyaluronate has been approved for use in food in Japan, the United States, Australia and some other countries. As an important oral beauty raw material, sodium hyaluronate will have a positive impact on China's food industry.

Sodium hyaluronate is produced by fermentation of Streptococcus equi subsp. Zooepidemicus with glucose, yeast powder and peptone as culture medium. It is a kind of linear macromolecular polysaccharide. It has a variety of important physiological functions, such as skin water retention, lubrication of human joints, regulation of vascular wall permeability, regulation of protein, and promotion of wound healing.

At first, the development of sodium hyaluronate in China mainly focused on cosmetic products. Nowadays, sodium hyaluronate appears in oral beauty products as an important skin care ingredient. Studies have shown that oral sodium hyaluronate has the samecosmetic effect as smearing.

After included in the new food raw materials this year, the application scope of sodium hyaluronate can be expanded to milk and dairy products, beverages, alcoholic drinks, cocoa products, chocolate and chocolate products, candy and frozen drinks. The recommended consumption amount is 200 mg / day, which has covered the most food and beverage types on the Chinese market .

Since March this year, Chewable tablets, soft sweets, drinking water, bubble water and other foods based on sodium hyaluronate have spring up like mushrooms on the Chinese market. Increasing skin moisture and improving complexion are the main selling points of these new products. It is believed that there will be a large amount of sodium hyaluronate food on the Chinese market in the next 1-2 years.
